Danese is pleased to announce an exhibition of ink drawings by Barry Le
Va, widely considered one of America’s most influential post-minimalist
sculptors. The exhibition opens to the public Friday, February 15 and continues
through Saturday, March 16.
By their very title, Le Va’s Diagrams for Double-Tiered Sculpture
demonstrate a direct relationship between the two-dimensional plan or schematic
(architectural associations being fundamental to Le Va’s work) and
the actual three-dimensional volume – or, sculpture.
These layered, dynamic works discard traditional order and compositional
“rules” and allow for a subjective and non-linear process of decision
making. “The artist’s studies in architecture have contributed
to his sensitivity toward space, presence, volume, form, force fields, relations
and tension”¹ – elements that are contained in his drawings and
lead directly to the development of his sculpture. As Le Va has said, “There’s
no sense in worrying about what it’s going to look like beforehand.
If you have your elements that mean something, it’s arranging them
to focus in on what you want them to do…it’s closer to musical
composition.”²
Born in Long Beach, California in 1941, Le Va graduated from the Otis Art
Institute in 1967 and subsequently moved to New York where he has lived
and worked since 1970. His work is included in the collections of many major
museums, among them, the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo; The Museum
of Modern Art, New York; The Ohio State University, Wexner Center for the
Visual Arts, Columbus; and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York.
